What is the Digit Span Test?
The Digit Span Test is a gold standard clinical psychometric test featured in the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV). It evaluates the storage and operational capacity of the brain’s phonological rehearsal loop.
Measure and expand your verbal working memory buffer. Flashes numerical sequences for immediate forward or reverse reproduction, evaluating raw memory span.
Primary Brain Target: Left Ventrolateral Prefrontal Cortex (Broca’s Area) & Wernicke’s Area
Cognitive Domain: Phonological Working Memory
The Digit Span Test is a gold standard clinical psychometric test featured in the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV). It evaluates the storage and operational capacity of the brain’s phonological rehearsal loop.
Based on George Miller’s famous 1956 paper "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two", the normal human digit span is 7 ± 2 digits for forward recall and 5 ± 1 digits for reverse recall.
Forward span measures passive phonological holding capacity. Reverse span requires active executive manipulation: holding the numbers in working memory while mentally transposing their order in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.
A high digit span allows you to follow complex verbal instructions in meetings, absorb multi-part technical directives, and remember phone numbers, API keys, or verification codes without writing them down.
